Adapting for 6th ed: Blood Angels in 6th

I've decided to kick start a series of articles for adapting armies to 6th ed. Not only will this help people adapt their current armies to 6th, but it will also help me too get used to 6th ed style lists. I'll do a article for each army, well at least the ones I have a fair amount of knowledge, so sorry, no Tau etc.

The poor Blood Angels, they got hit extremely hard by the nerf bat. In fact they got hit as hard as a step child ginger kid. One of the most popular lists for Blood Angels took the nerf hit and that was Razorspam. If you play Razorspam (like I did) then you're in for a hard time.

Just to clear something up, I stopped playing B.A as I do not like jumpers (been there done that and got the t-shirt) and CSM is a higher love than Angels.

You can adapt, but it will be hard, the changes are too much to make B.A Razors like they once were.

It's not all bad though, as the rules sort of 'force' Blood Angels to do what they should be doing and that's bouncing around on jump packs.

Changing for 6th

As mentioned above, Blood Angels should stick to do what they do best and bounce around with jump packs. There are other lists they can do, though I'll move onto these later.

A typical Blood Angel jumper list is like this:

Blood Angels 'Red Fleas' - unlimited points

HQ

Librarian - jump pack, shield of sanguinus & blood lance
Honour Guard - jump packs & 4 x plasma guns

Elite

Sanguinary Guard - power fist
Sanguinary Guard - power fist
3 x Sanguinary Priests - jump packs

Troops

10 x Assault Marines - 2 x meltaguns - Sgt w/ power fist
10 x Assault Marines - 2 x meltaguns - Sgt w/ power fist
10 x Assault Marines - 2 x meltaguns - Sgt w/ power fist
10 x Assault Marines - 2 x flamers - Sgt w/ power weapon
10 x Assault Marines - 2 x flamers - Sgt w/ power weapon
5 x Scouts - camo cloaks & sniper rifles

Fast Attack

5 x Vanguard Veterans - jump packs, thunder hammer, power fist, 2 x power weapons & melta bombs

Heavy Support

5 x Devastators - 4 x missile launchers
5 x Devastators - 4 x missile launchers
5 x Devastators - 4 x missile launchers

Fortification

Aegis Defence Line w/ Quad Gun

Tactics

As you can see this list is full on infantry and uses a hellvua lot of jump packs, it really sticks to the B.A theme.

The list is packing two hard assault units in the form of Sanguinary Guard, their power weapons should munch through basic infantry with ease. You could switch the power weaps to axes for that AP2, however I probably wouldn't bother, as the mass 2+ armour save you're going to come across is Terminators and they will munch through S-Guard in no time.

Vanguard are a nice distraction unit. Something to tie up a shooty unit when they arrive, so your Angels do not get blasted to bits.

Scouts are your cheap objective scoring unit, though do not forget the Assault Squads can combat squad.

Devs provide the long range fire support, they can take out vehicles and let the flamer equipped Assault Squads burn and punch.

The aegis is an essential part of the army, without it you have no anti air. Depending on where and how you play, anti air may not be important. Though I would always take some anti air just to be on the safe side. You can place the Scouts with this and they will get a 3+ cover thanks to the combined camo cloak and aegis line. The Scout Sgt can man the quad gun and unleash the dakka.

Blood Angels 'Dread-Guard' - unlimited points

There's two cool units I like in the B.A codex and that's Furioso Dreadnoughts and Sanguinary Guard. Out of these cool units you can make a very elite looking list. It's not uber awesome, but I am sure you will have a good time with it.

HQ

Commander Dante
Librarian - jump pack, shield of sanguinus & blood lance

Elite

Furioso Dreadnought - extra armour & magna grapple
Furioso Dreadnought - extra armour & magna grapple
3 x Sanguinary Priests - 3 x jump packs

Troops

5 x Sanguinary Guard - 2 x infernus pistols & power fist
5 x Sanguinary Guard - 2 x infernus pistols & power fist
5 x Sanguinary Guard - 2 x infernus pistols & power fist
5 x Sanguinary Guard - 2 x infernus pistols & power fist
5 x Sanguinary Guard - 2 x infernus pistols & power fist
5 x Scouts - sniper rifles & camo cloaks

Fast Attack

Vanguard Veterans - jump packs, power fist, 2 x power weapons & melta bombs - Sgt w/ thunder hammer
Vanguard Veterans - jump packs, power fist, 2 x power weapons & melta bombs - Sgt w/ thunder hammer

Heavy Support

Dreadnought - 2 x twin-linked autocannons
Dreadnought - 2 x twin-linked autocannons
Dreadnought - 2 x twin-linked autocannons

Tactics

This list is very elite due to the high cost of the S-Guard and Dante to allow them to be troops.

You've got some armour in this list, the Dreadnoughts will be ok at the back of the board as long as you find them cover; they can also be your anti air with the twin-linked guns, so not so much need for a quad gun here.

Furiosos are the odd couple in this list. They will lag behind unless you get good rolls. I just really like them though, especially with blood talons, but there's no need for talons in this list with the S-Guard crushing skulls. I think switching them for Furioso Librarians would be better and take blood lance and wings.

Like the previous list, Vanguard act as distraction and disruption units. Because this list is tiny you need something to distract the opponent and these guys will do the job nicely.

Blood Angels 'Raven-Flea' - unlimited points

Yup I am pretty crapola at coming up with names. I guess Raven-Flea doesn't sound too bad.

I think the only way for Blood Angels to do vehicles is the none transport option. See Razors or Rhinos carrying Assault Marines isn't going to work, the clue is in the name why. Then why would you take Tacticals? Assault Marines are simply better.

I will say that I am not a huge fan of Death Company. I know a lot of people like them, so I've shoehorned them into this list and really made them the focus in this list.

HQ

Astorath the Grim
Librarian - jump pack, shield of sanguinus & blood lance
Honour Guard - jump packs & 4 x plasma guns

Elite

Chaplain - jump pack
1 x Sanguinary Priest - jump pack

Troops

10 x Death Company - 2 x power fists
10 x Death Company - 2 x power fists
Death Company Dreadnought - magna grapple
Death Company Dreadnought - magna grapple
10 x Assault Marines - 2 x plasma guns
10 x Assault Marines - 2x plasma guns

Fast Attack

Land Speeder - 2 x multi meltas
Land Speeder - 2 x multi meltas
Land Speeder - 2 x multi meltas

Heavy Support

Stormraven - twin-linked lascannon & twin-linked multi melta
Stormraven - twin-linked lascannon & twin-linked multi melta

Tactics

This list has quite a Death Co feel to it, it has got multiple Death Co units including Death Co Dreadnoughts. Add the Chaplains as well and you've got the whole Death Co shebang.

I know it is kind of putting all your eggs in one (two baskets), but each unit of Death Co along with a Dreadnought load up in a Raven with Chaplain/Astropath. Took Death Co Dreadnoughts because they are cool and well, yeah....

Assault Marines are your objective holding units. They can combat squad and then bunker down and blast with the plasma gun. If someone comes too close they can counter assault. Try and keep them together so they can gain benefits from Sanguinary Priests.

Speeders zoom up in a typical suicide fashion and nuke the tough cookie stuff. Ravens go for transports as those lascannons can tear up Rhinos etc pretty easily; Death Co then bail out and punch in the face.

There's some example Blood Angel lists, which should work in 6th ed. If you're using Angels or anything like the list above, then let me hear it in the comment box.
